Because there are no direct sync utilities between Outlook 2011 and Google Calendars, syncing between these services requires use of iCal as an interim step. So first you must set up iCal to sync with Google, and then you will sync Outlook with iCal:

1. Follow the directions for iCal outlined in the previous section.
2. Use these instructions provided by Microsoft to sync iCal and Outlook 2011 for Mac. (The final step of syncing with a mobile device is optional.)

Option 1: Allow iCal to display and edit your Google Calendar

1. Launch iCal.
2. Open the Calendar menu and select Preferences.
3. Switch to the Accounts tab.
4. Add a new icon by clicking the plus (+) icon below the list of accounts at left. Your BU Exchange account should already be listed here.
5. In the Account Type drop-down menu, select Google.
6. Enter your Google email address and password in the respective fields.
7. Click Create.
8. Unless you’d also like Mail to manage email for this account, uncheck the Mail checkbox next to Also set up.You may also deselect the other options according to your preference.
9. Click Create.
10. Once you see Google listed along with your Exchange account, you may close the Preferences window.
11. iCal will now display events from both of your calendars, using color to distinguish between them. When you create a New Event, you can simply double-click on it if you wish to change the calendar in which it lives, as shown below. You might do this, for example, if you don’t want personal (Google) events to display in your Exchange calendar.

Option 2: Allow iCal to display (but not edit) your Google Calendar

1. Log in to your Google Calendar at www.google.com/calendar
2. Click on the Settings drop-down menu in the upper-right corner of Google Calendar.
   
3. Select the Settings menu item.
4. Switch to the Calendars tab.
   
5. Click on the name of the calendar you’d like iCal to be able to show.
6. In the Private Address section, click on the green ICAL button.
   
7. Copy the URL from the resulting pop-up window and click OK.
8. LaunchiCal.
9. Go to File > New Calendar Subscription.
10. In the resulting window, paste in the URL you copied from your Google Calendar and then click Subscribe.
11. Set any appropriate preferences and click OK.
