School of Medicine announce2s 70 faculty hires, promotions

The School of Medicine recently announced more than 65 faculty hires and promotions, and among the physicians, researchers, and educators joining MED’s many departments are faces both new and familiar.

Helen Tager-Flusberg has served as professor of anatomy and neurobiology at MED since 2001 and recently she was named a professor of pediatrics, as well. Her long-standing interests are in language and social-cognitive development in a number of different populations, especially autism, Williams syndrome, and language disorders. More recently, her research has explored the connections among genes, brain pathology and cognitive/behavioral impairments in people with these disorders at different ages.

Noteworthy recent hires at the School of Medicine include Mirjana Nesin, a 1983 graduate of the University of Belgrade and a Boston Medical Center staff physician who will research neonatology, and Wilbert Evert Hurlow, a family medicine specialist who will train medical students and residents in Lesotho. Below is a list of all of MED’s recent hires and promotions.

School of Medicine — Appointments, summer and fall 2005

Jodi Frances Abbott, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology. She will teach medical students and will train residents and fellows as well as conducting research on prenatal diagnosis.

Atul Aggarwal, instructor in radiology. Aggarwal will teach medical students and residents.

Caroline Apovian, associate professor of pediatrics. This appointment is in addition to her appointment as associate professor of medicine. Apovian will teach medical and dental students and will conduct research into pediatric weight management.

Tamar Barlam, associate professor of medicine. Barlam will give lectures, teach as an attending physician on the infectious disease consultation service at Boston Medical Center and the Boston Veterans Administration Healthcare System, and participate in teaching sessions.

Peter Bergethon, associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology, in addition to his appointment as adjunct research assistant professor of biochemistry. Bergethon will train graduate students and will establish a research program in integrative biomedical science.

Oscar Bernal, assistant professor of medicine. Bernal will teach as an attending physician, a preceptor, and a Grand Rounds speaker and will lecture medical house staff and medical students on neurology topics.

Valérie Bouchet, instructor in pediatrics. She will supervise research fellows and conduct research in neonatology and microbial population genetics.

Andrew Budson, associate professor of neurology. He will serve as associate director of the clinical alzheimer’s disease programs and will conduct research on memory at the Bedford Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Giovanna Buttice, instructor in biochemistry. Buttice will supervise students and perform research into atherosclerosis.

William DeBassio, associate professor of pediatrics, as well as a promotion from the rank of clinical assistant professor to the rank of associate professor of neurology. He will teach residents and continue his teaching and research in pediatric neurology.

Eric Devine, assistant professor of psychiatry. He will supervise medical students and residents and will provide clinical care and supervision as codirector of a clinical trial on treatment of alcohol dependence.

Laurie Douglass, assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology. She will teach medical students, residents and staff about epilepsy and pediatric neurology and will develop a pediatric epilepsy program.

Kristina Duarte, adjunct clinical assistant professor of family medicine. She will teach medical students in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses and the family practice mentorship program.

Beverly Heidi Ellis, assistant professor of pediatrics. This appointment is in addition to her appointment as assistant professor of psychiatry. Ellis will precept and supervise residents in international health and immigrant/refugee patients.

Shawn Ferullo, clinical instructor in family medicine. Ferullo will teach in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses and the family practice mentorship program for medical students.

John Gaca, clinical assistant professor of medicine. Gaca will teach and supervise cardiology fellows.

Nicole Guppy, instructor in pediatrics. Guppy will lecture and teach medical students in clinical duties.

Avneesh Gupta, assistant professor of radiology. Gupta will teach medical students as a physician educator and will be the codirector of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Ariel Hirsch, assistant professor of radiology. Hirsch will train medical students and residents and will direct clinical programs and conduct research.

David Hoffman, adjunct clinical assistant professor of psychiatry. He will teach and supervise medical students, interns, and other trainees.

Wilbert Evert Hurlow, clinical assistant professor of family medicine. He will train medical students and residents in Lesotho, South Africa.

Elaine Hylek, associate professor of medicine. She will conduct research in thrombosis and anticoagulation and will serve as a mentor in the Clinical Research Training Program. She will also provide patient care at BMC.

Anthony Jabre, associate professor of otolaryngology. This appointment is in addition to his appointment as associate professor of neurosurgery. He will continue teaching in the Department of Neurology and will work with the members of the Department of Otolaryngology in patient care and development of a multidisciplinary team focusing on skull base surgery.

Scharukh Jalisi, assistant professor of otolaryngology. Jalisi will teach in the Clinical Research Training Program.

Milos Janicek, associate professor of radiology. He will teach and conduct research.

Angela Lee Jefferson, assistant professor of neurology. She will supervise staff and trainees and will supervise fellows and medical students performing research.

Kevin King, instructor in emergency medicine. He will teach medical students and residents in the Boston Medical Center Emergency Department.

Warren Krackov, assistant professor of radiology. Krackov will teach residents and fellows and will conduct research.

Felix Kuo, instructor in dermatology. He will teach and train residents, conduct research and see patients.

Daniel Lee, adjunct assistant professor of otolaryngology. Lee will teach residents and direct them in the otolaryngology rotation at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

Renee McKinney, instructor in medicine. McKinney will organize the medical students and residency elective rotations and will lecture in the Women’s Health Lecture Series.

Asim Mian, instructor in radiology. He will lecture to medical students and residents and will have clinical duties.

Rachel Mott-Keis, clinical instructor in family medicine. Mott-Keis will teach in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses for medical students and in the family practice mentorship program.

Alexander Myers, clinical assistant professor of medicine. Myers will advise cardiology fellows and will develop programs.

Mirjana Nesin, associate professor of pediatrics. Nesin will teach and mentor medical students and residents and will perform research and patient care in neonatology.

Linda Ng, named assistant professor of urology has done postgraduate training including a fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in female urology, neurourology and reconstructive surgery from July 2004 to June 2005 under the direction of Edward McGuire. Her major clinical interests include male and female incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction and reconstructive urology.

Michael Nissensohn, clinical assistant professor of medicine. Nissensohn will lecture medical staff and house staff and will teach in the department’s board review course at Roger Williams Medical Center.

Ralph Orlando, instructor in urology. Orlando will teach medical students and residents at the Boston Veterans Administration Healthcare System.

Noriyuki Ouchi, assistant professor of medicine. Ouchi will supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians in conducting research on cardiovascular remodeling.

Yale Pollak, instructor in radiology. Pollak will teach medical students and residents in body imaging and diagnostic radiology.

Ann-Marie Richard, instructor in medicine. Richard will train students in laboratory research and will teach in biochemistry and medicine courses.

Matthew Russell, assistant professor of medicine. He will teach medical students, residents and fellows in the nursing home program at Quincy Medical Center and will teach medical students studying geriatrics.

James Schlosser, clinical instructor in sociomedical sciences and community medicine. Schlosser will teach medical students in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses.

Edward Stack, research instructor in neurology. Stack will perform research into Huntington’s disease.

Helen Tager-Flusberg, professor of pediatrics. This appointment is in addition to her appointment as professor of anatomy and neurobiology. She will teach graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior colleagues and will conduct research in language and social development.

David Thornton, assistant professor of medicine. He will oversee house officers and medical students assigned to the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Minh-Tam Truong, assistant professor of radiology. Truong will train medical students and residents in head and neck and central nervous system malignancy radiation and will conduct research.

Joseph Tumang, instructor of medicine. Tumang will teach graduate students in immunology courses.

Suraj Venna, instructor in dermatology. Venna will teach and train residents and perform research and clinical duties.

Bruce Wintman, clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery. Wintman will teach orthopedic residents in clinical duties in injuries and diseases of the hand and upper extremities.

Wen Yang, research assistant professor of surgery. Yang will work with residents and medical students in conducting research on immunotherapy for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy patients.

E. Kent Yucel, professor of radiology, part-time. He will supervise residents and medical students and will serve as a liaison with the Veterans Administration Healthcare System.

Judith Zazula, clinical assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine. She will work with residents on research projects and lecture and supervise medical students.

Xuemei Zhong, instructor in medicine. Zhong will teach graduate students in immunology courses.
