Brown University scored early and made the lead stand up as the Bears defeated Boston University 1-0 Wednesday night in Providence, R.I. B.U. (2-3), which has scored just three goals in its first five games, continued its pattern of alternating wins and losses to begin the season. Brown (1-2) got in the win column for the first time in 2005.

The Bears got the game’s only goal 19 minutes in, as Andrea Pagnanelli scored off a feed from Christin Serdjenian. Meanwhile, the Terriers could not break through, despite several close calls. B.U. had eight corner kicks and had two shots hit the crossbar, but could not avoid being shutout for the third time this season. B.U. outshot Brown 25-10. Brooke Bingham and Melissa Shulman each hit the post on second half shots which could have tied the game.

Stephanie Dreyer was solid between the pipes for the Terriers, allowing just the one goal. She recorded five saves, as her record dropped to 0-3 on the season.

“We are just not starting off games well enough,” said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. “We aren’t urgent enough in the beginning, even in the games we have won. We just really need to execute better.”

B.U. has a quick return to the field, as the Terriers travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the TCU Tournament this weekend. B.U. will face host TCU on Friday at 4 p.m., then take on Baylor at 1 p.m., on Sunday. This will mark the first-ever visit to the Lone Star State for the Terrier women’s soccer program.
