Lewis E. Braverman, a professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and an endocrinologist in the endocrinology, diabetes, and nutrition section at Boston Medical Center, received the Robert H. Williams Distinguished Leadership Award from The Endocrine Society at its 89th annual meeting in Toronto in June. The award is presented annually for outstanding leadership in fundamental or clinical endocrinology.

“It’s a nice honor,” said Braverman. “I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it. There are others who are more deserving.”

Braverman’s career in thyroid physiology and pathophysiology has spanned more than 40 years. He has published more than 550 papers, edited books, and journals on clinical endocrinology, and is considered a pioneer in the field. Braverman is currently editor in chief of Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Obesity and Endocrine Practice.

“Dr. Braverman certainly deserves recognition,” said Kathryn B. Horwitz, chair of the Endocrine Society’s awards committee. “His achievements exemplify the values of distinguished leadership for which this award was founded.”

Braverman earned an undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard University and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He has been at BU since December of 1999, and is currently doing research on iodine intake, especially in pregnant women and in breast milk. He is also assessing perchlorate and its relation to thyroid function.
