School of Law Wins Dollars-Raised Challenge in Annual Giving Day Competition

BU Law community donates nearly $200k, raising the most money of any school or program for the second consecutive year in University-wide fundraising drive.

In Boston University's one-day fundraising challenge, the School of Law raised nearly $200k, the most of any school or program.
In Boston University’s one-day fundraising challenge, the School of Law raised nearly $200k, the most of any school or program.

The BU Law community has once again come out on top in Boston University’s second annual Giving Day competition. The School of Law raised a total of $190,925.75* (up from last year’s $125,934) in the University-wide fundraising drive. Additionally, $6,600 will be added to that total, thanks to the generous underwriting support of the BU Law Fund co-chairs, Linda Peterson (’76) and J. Michael Schell (’76). This is the second consecutive year the School of Law has won the competition in terms of dollars raised.

“This is a tremendous help and an incredible statement about the generosity of our community,” says Dean Maureen O’Rourke.

All gifts—large and small, with an average gift amount of $723—will make a big impact on the School. Giving Day donors were able to designate how their gifts would be used, supporting a number of initiatives such as financial aid, Public Service Fellowships, and the BU Law Fund. Because of a matching challenge proposed by BU President Robert Brownearlier this year, all donations designated for the Public Service Fellowships will be matched dollar-for-dollar (up to $200,000 annually for five years) by the University. Gifts to the Law Fund also benefited from a matching gift, specifically from the BU Law Alumni Association Executive Committee: 27 members contributed $75,680 in a dollar-for-dollar Giving Day match.

In this year’s University-wide competition, the Varsity Athletics program had the most donors (2,025), followed by the College of Arts & Sciences (450), and Questrom School of Business (347). BU Law placed fourth with its 264 donors, an increase from last year’s 243 Giving Day donors. Following the School of Law, the School of Medicine raised the second most in terms of dollars-raised with $153,014.05*, followed by the Varsity Athletics program with $110,555.59*.

In total, the University raised $1,046,970.30* from 5,673 donors during the one-day fundraising challenge. BU Law extends its gratitude to all of our generous donors who have helped the School of Law become a leader in the University’s Campaign for Boston University: Choose to be Great.

* Please note these totals are not final. Check back to learn the official totals when all donations, including those submitted by standard mail, have been counted.
