BU Law Event Examines Intellectual Property in the Globalized Business Environment
Symposium welcomed scholars to discuss extraterritoriality and intellectual property law.
Boston University School of Law welcomed intellectual property law scholars to the 2019 the Journal of Science and Technology Law and the International Law Journal Symposium. Dean of BU Law, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, kicked off the event citing current US-Chinese trade relations, which are strained by allegations of intellectual property theft by China and the billion-dollar tariffs placed on Chinese goods by the US government. Discussion panels held throughout the day featured intellectual property law academics from across the country weighing in on matters of international branding, foreign sales, copyright infringement, and the misappropriation of trade secrets abroad.
Conversations surrounded the changes in legal rights for selling goods internationally, as seen debated by the International Trade Commission and US federal courts, to understand the limits of intellectual property protection for both the US and others as business is continuously affected by globalization.
“This issue is one of rare bipartisanship in Washington,” Onwuachi-Willig said. “With leading Democrats, Republicans, and business executives acknowledging the importance of intellectual property protection in a global market, even if they disagree on the best tactics to achieve it.”
