  1. In using a computer on the desktop, one of the worst things you can do is use a mouse: it requires you to reach over, form an awkward angle with your hand and wrist, grasp the thing, and move it around. After using a mouse for years, I encountered right-wrist pain which told me that this was a bad idea; and I realized that my right hand was being overworked (the heavily used Return key and cursor arrow keys are on the right). I realized that a trackball made far more sense, always being in one place and requiring no hand contortions; and if I located it on the left side of the keyboard, it would balance the load on both hands. That has worked well, over many years. I find the Kensington Expert Mouse trackball to be the smoothest.
So: rather than give away mousepads, encourage the use of trackballs, or Apple’s new Magic Trackpad.
