How to Find a Job—Today
More than 100 employers at Career Fair

There’s still a chance to find a job before you put away the books for the summer. Today’s Just-In-Time Career Fair, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, promises to be a font of information about jobs and internships for everyone—seniors, freshmen, and even alums.
More than 100 nonprofit, for-profit, and international employers are expected, and many are looking to fill jobs in communication, hospitality, finance, and more. Companies include the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel, SCVNGR, New England Sports Network (NESN), JP Morgan Chase, and Eliot Community Human Services.
The fair is sponsored by BU’s Center for Career Development (CCD) and school and college career offices. Eleanor Cartelli, CCD associate director for marketing and communications, says this is the first time that all of BU’s career offices and the Center for Career Development have joined forces for such an event. Cartelli says the fair is notable for other reasons: first, employers who usually focus on one school are opening their positions to all students; second, because the fair is happening late this year, all but two of the employers have multiple open positions; and third, there will be several employers who don’t often come to campus.
“The job market is improving,” says Cartelli, “but not all students have solidified their summer plans for internships or work, and many seniors have not yet landed their first job. Students will find that some employers were able to secure funding for additional positions; some have not filled positions yet and are looking for BU students to be part of the pool, and a few are beginning to recruit for fall internships.”
How to prepare? Katie Klyng (CAS’12), who attended last February’s expo and eventually garnered two job offers, suggests that visitors practice by first presenting themselves to an employer that they are not really interested in, and then hit the employers they are serious about. Klyng, who will begin working at the Fund for the Public Interest, in Austin, Texas, after graduation, also suggests that students research the companies they are interested in before they attend.
The Just-In-Time Career Fair is today, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, 775 Commonwealth Ave., second floor. Registration is encouraged, but not required. The Center for Career Development is at 19 Deerfield St., third floor, Kenmore Square, next to the post office.
