  1. This is such an important topic. I am so grateful for your work in this area, Professor Citron. I hope all the candidates for public office will adopt these guidelines. If they do not, why not? Also, I suggest anyone who is interested in this topic read an article published this past weekend in the Farnam Street newsletter entitled “The Illusory Truth Effect,” which describes why even savvy news consumers can be fooled by “fake news” and some steps to take to minimize/prevent being manipulated by false information, thus preventing the dissemination of dangerous misinformation.

  2. Deep fakes can be detected technically by injecting cryptographic watermarks in images or video. If campaigns pledged to utilize this technology, then those who wish to authenticate media content could do so … and everyone else should assume content is suspicious unless authenticated by a source they trust.
